Brian Malone

He then played for 4 years at Lehigh University and graduated in 1998. Coach Brian has played every position including goalie and is still playing. He comes from a family of coaches, including his father, Dennis, who still coaches at  Gilman School, and his brother, Chris, an All-American at the University of Maryland who coached lacrosse at Loyola Blakefield, University of Pennsylvania, and Arizona State. One thing Coach Brian enjoys about coaching is working with his assistant coach, Mike Kernan: “We compliment each other so well. It has gotten to the point that when I pull a boy over to the sideline, he already knows exactly why and how to help. It makes everything that much more enjoyable.” The pleasure he gets in coaching is not something which is easy for him to describe, but “it has everything to do with having an influence on these boys being able to play this game for as long they would like to. This game is great in ways that others are not because you don’t need to be the fastest or biggest, as a small player for many years, it is about being the smartest and hardest working. I always focused on finding a way to get on the field. In high school, I was asked as a Junior if I wanted to play JV because I would never play as an attackman on Varsity. I walked up to the midfield coach and changed my position that day. I found myself participating in every game from that point on. The sport of Lacrosse will pay you back for your hard work.”  Coach Brian began coaching 7 years ago when my oldest son was 4 years old in the Hereford Rec program. In 2019, that son was invited to play for another club team, but after 6 weeks they returned to Hereford Rec, and then started with HLC last year. Although his family still gets invitations from other clubs, Coach Brian and his son love HLC’s focus on developing the kids, as well as the families and community involved–“The relationships my family has developed over the years in this community have been life changing and appreciate the opportunity to give back.”

Michael Kernan

Coach Kernan was a 3 sport athlete at St. Paul’s where he was a tailback for the football team, Captain of the wrestling team, and midfielder for Coach Brocato’s lacrosse team. Before transferring to the University of Delaware, he enjoyed playing club lacrosse at York College of Pennsylvania.
